Replacing worn AR coated crystal at AD
To my question: I currently own four Lange watches (pictures to be posted when I find some time). On one of my watches, a Dato PT, the AR coating has worn off of the front crystal a bit on one edge. The AD said that they will replace it for me but I'm reluctant to do so because I thought that only the Lange factory repair shop should be doing repairs on complications. Am I just paranoid or is my concern justified?
Has anyone had a similar experience? Any advice and/or comments would be appreciated.
Regards,
Tom C
Answer:
I personally would not let an AD mess with my watch. If they mean that they will send it in for you, then that's a different story. You are relatively close to the only authorised service center in the US in NYC.
Time is the quality of nature that keeps events from happening all at once. Lately it doesn't seem to be working.
Answer:
Welcome, Tom, and Happy New Year! They should send it to Alkis and nobody else. He's the only Lange-authorized watchmaker in the US & the only one who can get the Lange crystal. Or you can bring it there yourself if you visit NYC. I've seen this happen with lots of 1815s but not other models -- it wears off the edges of both the top and bottom crystals and causes blotchiness (see below). Hopefully the AD is saying they'll send it to Alkis for replacement and not that they'll do it in-house, because I'd really question the wisdom of a Lange AD who'd allow anyone else open the caseback of a Lange that they sold, especially something as complicated as a Datograph. Other A. Lange Quiz:
How to check on stolen Lange watches?Lange 1?
Any observations on the 1815 ab/auf?...?
Grand Luminous 1 Photos?
Traveling overseas now and missing these two...?
How much does a Lange 1 go for?
