but the dial configurations IMHO are not as nice as the classic Lange 1. Am I off base on this? I would think most here would prefer the smaller version.
There is a fine line between a hobby and mental illness. you think that the dials arent as nice as on the regular Lange-1.
Most of the regulars here think that Lange made a mistake by introducing the Grosse versions (of both Lange-1 and Langematik). I agree in that I dont particulary like the Grosse Lange-1's perhaps with the exception of the Grosse Luminous. I am not sure about the Grosse Langematik's.
From your post I guess you like the regular size Lange-1's better then the enlarged version and I would suggest, if you havent already done so, to visit an Auth. Dealer and have him show you the different models of the Lange-1. Pick the one, Grosse or regular sized, that pleases you the most.
Enjoy yourself while looking for your Lange! Whatever model you choose, you cant go wrong as long as you like it.

In that case I would suggest you dont get either model since both have something you dont like; be it less interesting dials (an observation with which I agree, with that one example) or a case size that is to small.
Have you tried both on? Perhaps a regular sized Lange-1, with a lighter dial, can hide the fact that it is still 'just' a 38.5mm watch. imo lighter dials do let the watches seem bigger (is that a correct sentence?). The new Lange-1 TZ is as big as the Grosse Lange-1. Perhaps you find a pretty dial on one of them. It is somewhat thicker though (11mm vs. 9.9) but that added thickness is compensated by the looks of that incredible new movement.
