Watch-Pop

Long Time Listener, First Time Caller

I have been a fan of Langes from afar for some time. However, it was only on a recent trip to Palm Springs that I finally got to see the watches in all four dimensions (you know, length, width, height, and that soft Saxon glow). I had essentially settled on an 1815 as an entry piece into the world of A Lange & Sohne, but when I got there was absolutely amazed by the Saxonia, which I had essentially discounted because of its size. The Saxonia is, after all, a "mere" 34mm. Ha! This "little" watch looks perfectly balanced and classically sized as a dress watch.
I quickly discovered that new Lange retailers, while knowlegable and enthusiastic, were not about to discount in any meaningful fashion. So, a quick plea to TZers was made. After several days a response came with some absolutely gorgeous photos of a Saxonia in yellow gold with blue hands and markers (See Glad I didn't sell it). Alas, the price was more than could be borne. However, we both rethought our positions, and well, I now own my first Lange.
Each day I find some new fasinating element of this little watch, and my appreciation of it continues to grow. The only danger here is that I have discovered a new yearning. Everyone remembers that Dante wrote about the seven levels of hell, but he also described the seven levels of heaven. To a certain extent, this describes Langes. There is heaven in their flawless workings and cases, but a broad road to perdition is paved with perpetuals, datographs, cabarets, and Lange 1s. However, for now I am absolutely contented with my "little sin".
Thanks to Bob L., CR, and all of you on the Lange forum for your wisdom and advice (even if I was lurking for most of it).

Congrats on your first Lange. Any chance of a picture? I hope to enter the Lange ownership ranks as well and am going to visit the Lange display in DC this weekend. I also have considered the 1815 a nice entry point and appreciate your feedback on the Saxonia.

Jeff: Congratulations on the Saxonia. As we've discussed, it is a truly wonderful watch, with beautiful proportions. For those interested in seeing a picture of Jeff's watch, it is a few threads below under "Glad I Didn't Sell It."
Well, as it turns out, I did sell it, and Jeff bought it -- at a fair price to both of us, I think. The transaction was wonderfully smooth; it worked the way you would hope all trades on the Sales Corner would work.
As for me, the sale of the Saxonia was part of collection reconstruction. I've also sold a beautiful JLC Sun/Moon and a Blancpain Triple Date. And where have the proceeds gone? Back to Lange, of course. I just received yesterday a Lange 1 in rose gold.
My efforts are nearly concluded (I am just selling my GO Panoreserve, also a wonderful watch, but duplicative of the Lange 1's functions -- it's on Sales Corner, of course). I'm left with a smaller, more concentrated collection that features the Lange 1. And Jeff is left with my (excuse me, his) Saxonia, which itself is worthy of being a "feature" watch.
Thanks Jeff and here.
Regards,
Bob
