What's up with bigger is better?

I notice that Langes are growing. Some of the new watches in their line this year are just super-sized versions of existing watches, which were already on the big side. This trend isn't just Lange (Panerai comes to mind), but what is up with it? I think that watches > 40mm aren't elegant. I think that the plain old 'matik or L1 (regular size) is already large and very masculine. Why the trend towards bigger? Maybe that's what the market wants right now but I can't help but think that this is a passing thing. I hope it is.
Also, when is Lange coming out with a "banker" type watch, with a second here? That would be much more interesting to me than a "super grande 55mm L1 with helium escape valve" or whatever they might have in the works.

My post there was intended for discussion, and not intended as trolling or flamebait. I intend to buy a Lange ('matik or L1, regular size) sometime this year. I'm just wondering what is going on and I'm not exactly thrilled by their new offerings this year.

Interesting comments. But you can still buy the regular sized Langes. Because of this new announcemet, if you so chose, or are built like Arnold Schwarnegger or other Olympian, then you can buy the 42mm sized ones. Or if you happen to be particularly slim or prefer smaller watches, you can buy the Little 1. For some event that size is too large and would opt for a Saxonia. More power to him! Would you rather there be no choice? I see choice as a good thing, no?
Dual here...I can only confirm that they are working on it. See my post entitled "Observations", but don't know when it will hit the market. I do agree that this is definitely a more interesting watch, and a useful complication than just the same watch in a larger case or another dial.

I do believe this started as an American phenomenon. Look at the huge SUV's people are lumbering around in, look at the bigger and bigger houses they are living in. I think I read somewhere that the average house in the USA is 50% bigger then it was a few years ago. Look at the 'Super Size' meals people eat at fast food joints. Look at the stores....WalMart, Home Depot, Lowes....it's big, bigger, biggest. Giant this, mega that. For some reason people have been conditioned that bigger equates to being richer or better off. It's part of what happened in the 90's when people got fat, dumb and lazy in the stock market. The dotcom bubble and all that stuff.
Is it a fad? Will it go away??? Don't know. But I think the watch thing will calm down a bit. We won't be going back to 32mm watches as being full sized, but we aren't going to settle on 40mm+ as being average either.
