A fact: The best Omega movement is a 1021.

Now you all think I'm mad or I don't know a thing about watches as we all know the best movement was the 30T2 RG, or maybe the 321, or the ...etc. Both facts about me could be true of course, I'm not the person to pass judgement on either fact.
I'm referring to something I read in a magazine I got at the Omega museum, and I want to share this amazing fact with you:
In 1976 some unknown Spanish person bought a gold Omega Constellation, Calibre 1021 with a COSC chronometer rating (the 1021 is a day-date movement, 65.000 were made)
The COSC certificate remained in Bienne with the manufacturer, where it was put on file without further attention. Years later this bulletin de marche (number 5657587) caused a small sensation when someone discovered that this standard production watch had been fitted with a movement that had a precision that no precision hand-adjusted movement had ever reached: it had passed all COSC precision tests with the error rate of 0 !! That means that in not a single test (position, temperature etc) the movement had deviated even a tenth of a second from actual time, it was the perfect chronometer.
And where is this watch now? Omega has not been able to trace the owner so far, so the watch is out there somewhere, maybe for one of us to find? Until it is sent to Bienne for service (I guess they'll have a search warrant out for it) it will probably not be found, unless someone is very lucky. It's like looking for Aldrins Speedmaster on a beach.

I can't agree with you that the best movement is a 1021, even based on the information that you provide, which I won't dispute, even for the sake of an argument. Just because a single 1021 passed the COSC with a perfect rating doesn't mean that the production run as a whole was, on average, any better or worse than any other COSC rated production run. Now if you want to say a c.1021 s/n 5657587 is the perfect Omega Chronometre or that a c.1021 was the best Omega Chronometre (I'd probably have to check out the Marine chronometre's to make certain), I'd be much more likely to agree. I know it's splitting hairs... But... =) Good Hunting, and a fascinating post, Jaap! -- Chuck Chuck Maddox ( Article index @ http://www.xnet.com/~cmaddox/cm3articles.html)
