Winding Crown

It you are not going to wear your automatic watches (a few months), Do you pull out the winding crown or leave as it is? Thanks!
Answer:
I don't know what you would gain by pulling out the crown for storage. On some watches I think this would open the waterproof seal, which would not be advisable. Perhaps there are other concerns. The time has come, the Walrus said, to talk of many things: of shoes--and ships--and sealing wax--of cabbages and kings....
Answer:
If you’re not going to ware a watch for a while, its better to let the main spring wind down, this ensures that the spring gets full use of its span and can provide as near to 100% of its potential energy as possible, making it last longer, thus keeping better time.

Someone posted a similar question a few weeks ago so I’ll direct you there

Answer:
Thanks for all of your inputs.
Answer:
In addition to being waterproof having the crown screwed in also helps to keep the case dust proof. Also, as Jayson said, it's good to let the spring wind down.
Answer:
I agree - the crown should be left in to keep dust, debris, and water vapor from entering the case, to avoid potential damage if the crown is stuck, and to allow the springs to wind down.

On another note, you should avoid letting it sit for that long without running if it can be helped. Wind it up by hand every few weeks to keep the oils distributed etc. even if you're not going to wear it. In this respect the watch needs some "exercise" now and then. Modern synthetic lubricants are less vulnerable to evaporation, clotting and congealing than traditional oils, but they're not immune.

If it ends up sitting for a very long time (like in a safe deposit box for a period of years for instance) it should be looked at by a watchmaker. Settling of oils can lead to poor timekeeping performance or accelerated wear at the least. "Mechanical watches are so brilliantly unnecessary. Any Swatch or Casio keeps better time, and high-end contemporary Swiss watches are priced like small cars. But mechanical watches partake of what my friend John Clute calls the Tamagotchi Gesture. They're pointless in a peculiarly needful way; they're comforting precisely because they require tending." - WG
