Omega 30T2 queries

Greetings All,

I am new to this forum but not to TZ and could use a little help

I just purchased a 30T2 and I have a few questions. Doesnt the balance wheel on all of the 30T2 models have weights that can be poised? Does everything seem proper in this movement?

The reason I ask is that this particular watch has a smooth balance wheel. Also, the size of the watch is 38mm, how many 30T2 styles were that large?

Below is a link to more pictures of the watch.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi MSB,

The last two iterations of the 30T2 family, both with and without a short seconds hand, have smooth balances. That would be the calibers 268, 269, 285 and 286. But they came out near the end of the fifties, and your movement is much earlier, late fourties or so. I would assume the balance in your watch is a replacement.

You are probably aware that the dial is a redial and/or the hands are not the original ones, but everything else checks out to my eyes.

A 38mm diameter 30T2 is highly unusual, they were usually much smaller than that, 34-35mm tops.

Hope this helps a bit.

Frank,

Thank you for the reply. Can this balance wheel achieve the same rate as the original one with weights? Doesnt the non-original balance wheel make the watch less valuable? Why would anyone change the balance wheel? I realize you have to be a well trained watch maker to know how to poise the weights plus the time involved is substantial to set the rate.

I assume the dial was redone but I thought the hands were original.

Hi

the original Omega leaf hands have the wider part almost at 2/3 of the way, this ones are in the first part (compare with the picture).

The glucydur replacement balance is functionally superior to the original Earnshaw balance - but you are right, in my opinion makes the watch "less original" and for me less valuable. In a watch now 60 years old, it must have happened sometime in the years that the balance needed replacement. And Omega, when asked, would supply the most up-to-date balance, i.e a glucydur.

I hate to rain on the parade, but in my opinion also the trainbridge wasn't born in this movement, the Omega plating is a different shade of pink.

Having said all this, it still is a very nice watch, and if the case can be shown to be of the same age as the movement, makes of his an unusual find.

Best wishes

Answer:
Franco,

Thank you for your input.

I too noticed the different colour train bridge and found that a bit odd, I wonder why it would have needed to be replaced.

I think it would be difficult to find a watch of this age that has been used with most of its original parts intact.
