Speedmaster cal 1861

Heritage aside do you think the current cal 1861 for the Speedmaster Pro is a better movement in terms of durability, robustness, lack of problems than the previous cal 321 and cal 861? I am contiplating between a rolex submariner and a Speedmaster Pro for a tool watch. Both watches have had caliber updates thoughout the years, and both designs have stood the test of time and have great history which is why I have narrowed it down to these two. I do not really need a chronograph nor do I need high water resistance so these two items are not critical.
I just wondering about the current cal 1861 if it is overall a better movement with better durability and less prone to quirks that some of the older cal 321 and cal 861 have had. Service is also important and I am not familar with Rolex. Status and image is not at all important. Thanks for any insight.
Answer:
If you are not concerned with status and image why don't you get a Seiko Diver's watch?

They have in house movement's, fairly indestructable and are varying degrees of inexpensive.

I have an Orange Monster that I just love. It was my everyday watch for a few years. I took off my Rolex GMT and put on the Seiko.

Of course I took off the Seiko and put on the Speedmaster Pro.

Answer:
I have both a Speedy Pro with the 1861 caliber and a Rolex Sub with the 3135 caliber. It would be hard for me to choose between them but I have NO doubts about Rolex durability (I've owned a Rolex since 1989) and accuracy. The Speedy still has to prove itself to me but I'd rather have the current model than a vintage one.

The Rolex is bulletproof, the Speedy has a certain charm and is good enough for EVA's. Bottom line? You need both!
Answer:
Although I should add that there's a possibility of getting a lemon in ANY item that you buy, whether it be a car or watch.
Answer:

is a Rhodium plated 861, so technically it is the same movement. I do not quite get why you're between a Speedmaster Pro and a Rolex Sub. A Seamaster would seem the more logical option, but who am I.

I would go for the Speedmaster, you'll probably have enough money left to get a decent diver's watch as well.
