New watch for Valentine's Day...

Over the weekend my fiancée exchanged Valentine's Day gifts early since my schedule doesn't permit us to see each other this Wednesday. She knew that I had been eyeballing a couple of Fossil watches so we went to the local Fossil store and she told me to pick out the one I wanted. After looking around for a few minutes I narrowed my choices down to two models within the Twist line, but since I suffer from indecisionitis I couldn't make up my mind right there on the spot. So I told my fiancée that we should go get some lunch so I can think about which one I wanted to get.

What made my decision hard was that both models had a dark dial and were on a strap. Not to mention that one of them looked very similar to the Fossil she bought me for my birthday back in June, and the other one I wasn't sure if I was crazy over or not.

(Here is the watch she bought be back in June)

As we were leaving the store I saw a model with a white dial on a bracelet that I really liked so my choice became even harder. During lunch I thought about it and I decided that I really don't have any white dial watches, and I really wanted a bracelet so I thought I had made up my mind when we went back to the store. When we got back to the store I looked at each model one more time, and then my eye fell on one that I didn't notice before. When the sales person came over I asked to see that model, and I knew once I put it on that it was the watch that I wanted since it had a white dial, came on a bracelet, and it doesn't look as similar to the watch that she bought me back in June.

The movements in the Twist series are kind of a strange cross between an automatic movement and a quartz movement. The automatic movement winds and runs the second hand while the quartz movement is intertwined to run the hours and minute hand. While some horologist purist here will turn their nose up at the idea of a quartz watch, this watch kind of combines the best of both worlds.

I find it to be a very good-looking watch, and the detail of the dial is amazing at this price point. It's fun to watch balance tick back and forth via the dial side, and you can easily see how full of a wind the mainspring has. The bracelet is a non-hair puller, and it feels really smooth on my wrist. The watchcase is heavy and measures in at 38 mm x 50 mm, but I find that it sits nicely on my 6.2-inch wrist.

Fossil named the watch "Arkitekt", but I nicked named it "Grid-iron" since it strangely reminds me of a football helmet with the bridge going across the dial.

I've really been enjoying the designs and the types of movements Fossil has been coming out with recently, and I have my eye on another model that is listed on their website for when I get my tax return later this month. I find that there watches offer a great look at a fantastic price, and that they are really fun to wear when you want something that is eye catching and different looking from the standard fashion watches found in every department store around the world. Plus they come with an 11-year warranty so it's really hard to say no to them when you enjoy spending less than the cost of an OEM alligator strap form the luxury watch world on a watch that you buy because it's fun to wear and you really like the unique design.

While they previously made mostly cheap trinket novelties, now they are making some really nice designs with some innovative concepts for not a lot of money. I would consider some of their designs to be on par to the likes of Hamilton.

But mechanical watches partake of what my friend John Clute calls the Tamagotchi Gesture. They're pointless in a peculiarly needful way; they're comforting precisely because they require tending." - WG

Answer:
The second hand doesn't drive the minute and hour hand at all, so you have to sync the minute hand to the second hand (just like you do on a Speedmaster Pro when setting the time) so that they coincide when the second hand reaches 60 seconds. If I don't wear the watch the hour and minute hand will be on time, but the second hand will stop. It was done purely on a design basis since it allows Fossil to design the dial they way they did.

Answer:
Most Fossils use Citizen's Miyota, along with their recent automatic movement watches. I don't know which movement is in their Twist series since it seems that Citizen doesn't list all of their calibers on their Miyota web page. I believe that Fossil is testing the waters with their mechanical watches since it was either last year, or the year before that, they said they will start making some watches with Swiss movements. The Fossil that I bought my fiancée for Christmas has a Swiss movement, but I don't know what who's movement it is.
