Reputable watchmaker in D.C. area says Omega's new 2500C movement to be on par with Patek's cal. 5020.

Pretty cool! Looks like Omega has gone very very very upscale! "Why did it all turn out like this for me? I had so much promise. I was personable. I was bright. Oh, maybe not academically speaking, but I was perceptive. I always know when someone's uncomfortable at a party. It all became very clear to me sitting out there today, that every decision I've ever made in my entire life has been wrong." --Art Vandelay
Answer:
Patek 5020 has Cal. M.27-70 Q, which is basically a Lemania movement with perpetual calender and moonphase...

in my mind, you can't compare a handwind lemania movement (which incidentally was used as a base on which Omega built their cal321) and the "new" co-axial 2500C...

the Lemania has really proven itself as a great movement... while the co-axial technology is certainly amazing given the ability of it being able to be mass produced, but i wouldn't rank the 2500c next to Lemania 2310/Cal321/Patek 27-70... not at this stage anyway...

Having seen the current crops of Patke 240, 215 and 315. in terms of workmanship, i can say that Omega finishing is rather industrial when compare to the patek finishing... but of course for the money we pay for, Omega is fantastic value! :) The way to man's heart is through the aorta

Would you care to share the name of your "reputable watchmaker"?
Answer:
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the c.2500c's base movement an ETA? If so, I think I just heard Georges Zaslavsky howling in hails of derisive laughter!
Answer:
Cheers, Neil.
Answer:
But I too think the comparison isn't terribly apt... are we sure he wasn't referring to the new in-house chrono movements that are purportedly under development?

On another note, we haven't heard much "from the field" about watchmaker opinions about the c.2500C, so at least this gentleman's high esteem for the movement is reassuring.

Answer:
Sweeping statements have a way of being mis-understood.

Is it "on-par" in the level of finishing?
In accuracy?
In diameter?

I have NO doubt that the 2500C is a very fine mvmnt, but anyone who has looked closely at a Patek Mvmnt and the quality of finish found in truly "High Grade" Swiss wrist watches won't be making that comparison again.

Most here know I'm a fan of Omega, but really....

And there are different levels of finish no doubt, but got to admire Omega for what they do at their price point.

I for one am glad that there is something nicer to aspire to for the art, but for everyday it is hard to beat the Omega 2500 caliber in any practical way.

I know someone who owns a pretty nice $100K+ PP, but for everyday he wears something a little less pretty and more durable, like a vintage Sub and several vintage Daytona's:)

How about this for a great looker?

All the best Tim, happy new year!

Answer:
:) I'm such a sucker for finely finished movements

I love the Patek finishing... the 315,the 240, the 215... all very nicely finished... so much so that you can tell that the Omega finishing is more industrial looking..

BUT, at the price point that we pay for Omega, I think it's very good quality. We get what we pay for after all... :) thanks for sharing The way to man's heart is through the aorta
