Luminosity
- the new Speedy Date's lume isn't as good as others in the line
- I'm not charging it enough (if that's the case, how and how long do you guys charge your watches?)
- some folks are exaggerating a bit on how long their brightness lasts
Please educate me...
thanks,
peter
Answer:
how well it glows. The larger the markers (such as those found on the Planet Ocean and Seamaster Pro) glow brighter which causes them to be easier for the eye to see as the hours pass by through the night. If the watch has smaller markers it becomes harder to see as the hours pass, but even after hours of being in the dark they should give off a small amount of glow. (You may need to not look directly at the dial of the watch since our vision at night tends to be that the center of our field of view is lesser than what we can see peripherally.) As far as charging it, it just needs a quick exposure (less than a minute) to light to get it to glow. If yours is fading quickly it could be that the batch of Super_Luminova was bad and the watch needs to go in to have the dial and/or hands replaced in order for it to glow properly.

I agree with damon

Thanks, Damon. I'll try to charge my watch a little longer and see how it goes. If that doesn't work, I'll consider having it worked on. peter
Answer:
I think many owners think the lume will last "all night" at a brightness level similar to a freshly charged dial. Ain't gonna happen. If that is what you are looking for, get a Ball or Luminox. However, if I charge my PO at 10:00, (it is glowing like a freakin' torch), go to sleep and wake at 0300, I will still be able to tell the time although it will be much fainter. As Damon said, you may have to read the dial without looking directly at the center of it. - David

Answer:
Peter Two things: The largeness of the luminova isn't relevant, it's the thickness. The Speedmaster just has a rather thin layer.
Secondly: You have to charge it in the real sunlight, electrical light won't have the same effect anyway. Example: If I restore the luminova of my heavily luminova-loaded 2254 with a strongly flashing electrical torch, my 2254 will glow like a super torch itself, however just for a few minutes.

V.

"...Secondly: You have to charge it in the real sunlight, electrical light won't have the same effect anyway..." That's true.
Every morning when I open the shutters in my bedroom's windows (with the 2254.50 or the AT), the watch is exposed to maybe 5 secs.to the daylight. Go inside the house and the lume is very bright.

Thanks for all the responses. Yes, sunlight does work much, much better than artificial light. However, that doesn't help at night. I'd love to be able to charge it up right before going to sleep and be able to read it all night if I need to. Maybe I need an arc light... ;) peter
Answer:
Use a speedlight from a digital / film SLR if you want to charge it up. I use this method when I want to take lume shots of my watches.
