Finally cracked open my vintage - are parts *fairly* interchangeable with other calibres?
However, can a lot of the parts in the 552 still be used in the 501? I realize that there will be different parts between the two, but someone said that a lot of the parts are still the same, and if parts run out in one calibre - another calibre can sometimes be used for parts. Can the parts that essentially wear out be interchanged between the 501 and the 552?
thanks!
Answer:
Only a few parts are interchangable between these 2 calibers, these are in the setting and winding mechanism, some jewels and shock springs.Shaun.
: I found out that I have a cal501 like someone here astutely guessed based on my verbal
description. I also bought a second vintage in the hope of swapping the dial and hands (my watch had a recon
dial/hands) - but to no avail because the 2nd vintage is a cal552. I am now stuck with the second watch.

Answer:
like the pallet fork, and escape wheel? I would have thought these would be unchanged! How about the mainspring?
Answer:
but no not the complete pallets or any wheels, they have the same beat but the 552 is 1.05mm thinner and has a completely different auto winding system so nothing fits the 501.
You still have a 552 Omega that you can keep for parts or have restored,
Shaun.

E-mail me. I have been looking for a cal 552, and have a 1960 cal 503 Seamaster with good original dial and hands. Maybe we can work out a swap.
