New member needs advice on Speedmaster Date

I'm new to this forum, and am greatly impressed by the collective knowledge you guys have, and are willing to share. I'm about ready to enter the world of Omega, and have a couple of questions that maybe you folks can help me with.

The favored Omegas seem to be the Seamaster and Speedmaster Pro. While I like the Pro, it's a touch too large for me, and would really prefer an automatic. I have my eye on a Speedmaster Date (in black) that I think would suit my needs just fine, but can't find much information on it in the forum.

So the question is: Is there something wrong with the Speedmaster Date? Movement problems, reliability, accuracy?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time (no pun intended).
Answer:
Omega cal. 1152, essentially a Valjoux cal. 7750, possibly the most used chronograph movement today. It's accurate, reliable, and parts are abundant.

In fact, it's a very good watch. Most collectors around here prefer the Speedmaster Pro (Moon Watch) over it since it has the history of going to the Moon and being the only watch to ever pass NASA's tests. Collectors also like the movement inside of the Pro more since it's not a Valjoux 7750 based movement and it's not found in as many watches as the Valjoux 7750 is.

Watch collector's can be like movie critics in that what they like is not always the best choice. There is nothing wrong with the Speedmaster date since it's a very robust watch, and the movement inside of it is as tough as nails. The only problem that you may have with the watch is that once you get it, you may find that you have an unexplainable urge to get another Omega.

Large watches always feel funny to the wearer when they are use to wearing normal size watches. I have a wrist that's less that 6.25 inches and I wear the Speedmaster 57 Reissue (same size as the Pro), the Broad Arrow, the full-sized Seamaster Pro, and the 41 mm Aqua Terra. Never once has anyone said that the watch looks too big on me. When I first got into collecting watches I thought the Speedmaster Pro and the full-sized Seamaster was too big for me, but you'd be amazed at how fast you get use to the size. After wearing one for over 30 minutes you get use to the size and see that it looks fine on.

I hope this helps.

Best Regards,

Damon
When your watch gets out of order you have a choice of two things to do: throw it in the fire or take it to the watch-tinker. The former is the quickest. -MT

I recently purchased a Speedy Date and absolutely love it. I cannot speak to reliability etc. but have not heard anything negative about the watch.

I think you will find that most of the people who post on the forum own more than one Omega. As collectors, it is natural to gravitate to the more collectible pieces such as the Speedy Pro for it's historical significance. That said, I made the decision between the Speedy Pro and the Speedy Date because I prefer an automatic, a sapphire crystal and a date display. It is really up to you to decide on your preferences in a watch.

That said, as soon as I have some funds in the budget I am going to buy me a Moonwatch! :) --Dean

- do you have a 1000 pixel wide version of that nice "collection" that you could donate to our baby site?

Thanks for the info. I assumed it was pretty stout, but needed a little more comfort on it. As far as more than one, it's just a matter of time before we add more to the collection.

Thanks for the good advice.
