Watch appraisal for $100
Answer:
Sounds about right... so long as he does a decent job.I once paid a jeweler $35 per watch for an appraisal, and they didn't note the serial numbers, or the movement caliber, and gave some stupid appraisal values (a beat up Bulova tank more valuable than a 1950's Omega?). I was not pleased, but I used it anyway to document the value (?) of my collection.I suspect that the person the jeweler used just opened up a price guide and scribbled down numbers. Not too impressive.-- Bokonon: A watch guy in Boston quoted $100 to appraise four watches for insurance: reasons (two vintage and two fairly new watches). Does this sound high?

I cannot speak authoritatively on the current practices of the tade, but 10 years ago in the jewelry business, the standard charge (variable by appraiser)was a percentage of the estimated value of the pieces. This method, of course, led to some inflated valuations. The valuation is supposed to reflect an estimate of the replacement value (read supposed retail), not what the jeweler would pay for "second hand" items.Cheers
